What is devil's claw root?

Dried secondary tubers of Harpagophytum procumbens (Burchell) D.C. [Fam. Pedialiaceae], containing bitter principles, the primary being the iridoid harpagoside at 0.5% to 3%.

The draft monograph of the european Pharmacopeia requires a minimum of 1.2% of harpagoside calculated in relation to the dried root.

Common name: Grapple plant.


How much devil's claw do I need?

For appetite stimulation: 0.5g root or tincture (1:5 25% alcohol) 3 times daily. 1 tsp. to 2 cups water for tea.

Other uses: 1 to 2ml. liquid extract (1:1, 25% alcohol), 3 times daily.

Acute low back pain: 6,000mg. dried root (containing 50mg. harpagoside) per day.

Duration of administration: 2 to 3 months.
