Is selenium safe?

Selenium can cause side effects when taken in excessive amounts.

Symptoms of toxicity include liver damage, hair loss, heart problems, diseased teeth, nausea, diarrhea, irritability, and fatigue.

Daily selenium intake should be limited to 200mcg.


How much selenium do I need?

There is no Daily Value for selenium, but the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) is 70mcg. per day for men and 55mcg. per day for women.

Typical daily intakes of this mineral are 100mcg. for men and 70mcg. for women.

Selenium deficiency is associated with an increased risk of cancer and a heart condition called cardiomyopathy, impaired immune function, symptoms of arthritis, and liver disorders. A deficiency also might cause birth defects during pregnancy.
