What is magnesium?

Magnesium is a major mineral.

About half of the body's magnesium is located in the bones; the rest is found in the blood and other tissues.

Current research on magnesium?

Athletes: A diet low in magnesium might interfere with muscle strength and contribute to muscle cramps in athletes.

Cardiovascular Disease: Magnesium supplements might lower the risk of cardiovascular disease by regulating the heartbeat, preventing hardening of the arteries, and lowering the risk of blood clots.

Diabetes: Individuals with diabetes who supplement with magnesium might improve insulin activity and lower blood pressure.

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS): Some women with PMS have low levels of magnesium. Although some of the symptoms of PMS, such as muscle cramps, mood swings, and appetite changes, are similar to magnesium deficiency, there is not enough evidence to recommend magnesium supplementation as a treatment for this condition.
