In rare cases, patients may experience urticaria (a hypersensitivity reaction). Capsaicinoids are strong irritants to mucous membranes. Inhaling cayenne can produce a form of allergic alveolitis. No known problems ingesting capsicum during pregnancy although it may cause gastrointestinal irritation and should be used only under a doctor's supervision. It is not known if the pungent components in capsicum are secreted into breast milk.
Contraindications: Pregnant or breastfeeding patients should not take this herb without checking with their doctors. (It may cause gastrointestinal irritation and some components may be secreted in breast milk). Externally, contraindicated on injured skin and for those people allergic to cayenne preparations. Internally, cayenne may cause gastrointestinal irritation, although some reasearch suggests that it may influence the healing of duodenal ulcers. Excessive ingestion may cause gastroenteritis, hepatic or renal damage. May interfere with MAO inhibitors and antihypertensive therapy. May increase hepatic metabolism of drugs.
SPECIAL WARNING: Cayenne preparations irritate the mucous membranes even in very low concentrations and cause a painful burning sensation, especially to the eyes. Patients should not apply additional heat to preparations used externally.
