What is St. John's Wort?

St. John's Wort consists of the dried, above-ground parts of Hypercium perforatum L. [Fam. Hypericaceae], gathered during flowering season.

The herb contains anthraquinone derivatives, namely hyperciun, flavonoids, phenols, tannins, and volatile oils.


How much St. John's Wort do I need?

Unless otherwise prescribed.

Average daily dosage for internal use: 2g. to 4g. of herb or 0.2mg to 1.0mg. of total hypericin in other forms of preparations. 2g. to 4g. three times daily. Liquid extract: 2ml. to 4ml. three times daily (1:1 in 25% alcohol.) Tincture: 2ml. to 4ml. three times daily (1:10 in 45% alcohol.)

Duration of application: Patients may need to use St. John's Wort for several weeks or months before they feel better.
