Asian (Chinese or Korean) ginseng root consists of the dried main and lateral root and root hairs of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer [Fam. Araliaceae]. "White" ginseng consists of the dired root (often with the outer skin peeled off). "Red" ginseng is prepared by steaming the fresh, unpeeled root before drying. The root contains at least 1.5 percent ginsenosides (saponins), calculated as ginsenoside Rg1, peptides, polysaccharides, and antioxidants (maltol, salicylic acid, vanillic acid.)
Common names: Korean ginseng, Chinese ginseng.
Daily dosages: 1g. to 2g. of root equivalent preparations. 100mg. standardized twice per day.
Short-term for young and healthy: 0.5g to 1g. root daily, in two divided doses.
Long-term for old and unhealthy: 0.4g to 0.8g root daily. Doses may be taken continuously.
Duration of Application: Generally up to three months; a repeated course is feasible. For young and healthy individuals: A general course of 15 to 20 days followed by a two week root-free period between consecutive courses.
