What is folic acid?

Folic acid is a water-soluble B vitamin.

Folic acid was first found in spinich leaves, which is why it was named after "folium," the Latin word for leaf.

Another name for folic acid is folate.

Folic acid is a family of related compounds; the polyglutamate form is found in foods, while the monoglutamate form is found in supplements. Supplemental folic acid is better absorbed than folic acid from food.

Current research on folic acid?

Cancer: Folic acid might lessen the risk of developing certain forms of cancer, including colon cancer and cervical cancer.

Healthy Babies: Daily folic acid intakes of 400mcg. prior to conception and through at least the first trimester of pregnancy greatly reduce the risk of neural tube defects (NTD), which include the birth defects spina bifida and anencephaly. Women with history of giving birth to babies with NTD might need to take up to 4,000mcg. of folic acid to prevent future NTD.

Heart Disease: High levels of homocysteine in the blood are associated with an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, while consuming plenty of folic acid-rich foods lowers homocysteine levels and helps prevent heart disease.
