What is zinc?

Zinc is a trace mineral.

Zinc is found throughout the body, but the highest levels of zinc are in the eyes, kidneys, brain, liver, skin, hair, and nails.

Current research on zinc?

Arthritis: People with rheumatoid arthritis often have low zinc levels, although it is unclear whether the low zinc is a cause or an effect of the disease.

Athletic Performance: Athletes show increased loss of zinc through the urine and perspiration, which can contribute to low blood levels of the mineral. Increasing zinc intake should improve zinc status, but it is unclear whether it will benefit athletic performance.

Cardiovascular Disease: As an antioxidant, zinc helps prevent atherosclerosis, which is the underlying cause of heart disease.

Vision: Maintaining optimal zinc levels might reduce the risk of developing macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in older adults.
