What is valerian root?

Valerian root consists of the fresh under-ground plant parts, or parts carefully dried below 400°C, of the species Valeriana officinalis L. [Fam. Valerianaceae].

The roots contain essential oil with monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes (valerenic acid).

Preparations of valerian used therapeutically (infusion, extract, fluid extract, tincture) no longer contain the thermolabile and chemically unstable valepotriates.

How much valerian do I need?

Unless otherwise prescribed.

Internal: Dried rhizome/root: 0.3g. to 1g. three times daily. Tincture: 1/2 to 1 teaspoon (1ml. to 3ml.), once to several times per day. Extracts: Amount equivalent to 2g. to 3g. of herb; once to several times per day.
