Is sodium safe?

Excessive sodium intake is common in the United States and contributes to the development of high blood pressure.

About half of those people with high blood pressure are "salt sensitive." Cutting back on sodium intake usually reduces blood pressure and helps treat high blood pressure or hypertension.

How much sodium do I need?

There is no Daily Value or Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for sodium, but the estimated minimum requirements for adults is 500mg. per day.

Typical daily intakes of sodium are 2,300mg. to 6,000mg. and intakes as high as 15,000mg are not unusual.

A deficiency of sodium is rare, but can result from starvation, fasting, or excessive vomiting, diarrhea, or perspiration.

Symptoms of inadequate sodium intake include muscle weakness, poor concentration, memory loss, and dehydration.
