Saw palmetto berry consists of the ripe, dried fruit of Serenoa repens (Bartram) Small (syn. Sabal serrulata [Michaux] Nutall ex Schultes) [Fam. Arecaceae].
The berry contains fatty acids (principally lauric acid and ethyl laurate) with phytosterols and polysaccharides.
Daily dosages: 1g. to 2g. saw palmetto berry or 320mg. lipophilic ingredients extracted with lipophilic solvents (hexane or ethanol 90% v/v); equivalent preparations. Dried fruit: 0.5g. to 1g., three times daily. Liquid extract: 0.6ml. to 1.5ml. per day.
