Is niacin safe?

Nicotinic acid can cause flushing, headache, and itching of the skin when taken in excess of 1,000mg. per day. The niacinamide form of niacin does not cause the side effects associated with nicotinic acid, but also is less effective in lowering blood cholesterol levels. Time-release niacin supplements might increase the risk of liver damage and should be monitored closely by a physician.

How much niacin do I need?

The Daily Value for niacin is 20mg. Niacin must be consumed regularly, since it is not stored in the body. The body can convert the amino acid tryptophan to niacin; approximately half of the daily requirement for this vitamin is met in this way. Niacin needs increase as food intake increases. A deficiency of niacin rarely occurs alone, someone deficient in this vitamin is probably also lacking in other B vitamins.
