Licorice RootGlycyrrhiza glabra |
||||
With prolonged use and at higher doses, mineralocorticoid effects may occur (water retention and potassium loss, accompanied by hypertension, edema, and hypokalemia, and in rare cases myoglobinuria).
Not recommended during pregnancy and lactation. Licorice may interfere with existing hormone therapy (estrogens and anti-estrogenic activites documented in vivo).
Interactions with conventional drugs: Potassium loss due to other drugs, e.g. thiazide diuretics, may increase. Potassium loss increases sensitivity to digitalis glycosides.
Do not take this herb longer than 4 to 6 weeks without medical advice.
Note: There is no objection to using licorice root as a flavoring agent up to a maximum daily dosage equivalent to 100mg. glycyrrhizin.
