Licorice root consists of unpeeled or peeled, dried roots and stolons of Glycyrrhiza glabra L. [Fam. Fabaceae]. The Chinese species is G. uralensis.
The root contains glycyrrhizic acid (1% to 24%) and 25% water-soluble matter.
The root contains several flavonoids of flavanone and isoflavanone derivatives in addition to the potassium and calcium salts of the glycyrrhizic acid.
It also contains phytosterols and coumarins. (Experts have identified more than 80 volatile components.)

Average daily dosage: 5g to 15g of root, equivalent to 200mg. to 600mg. of glycyrrhizin. Three times daily: dried root, 1g to 5g.
