Is kava kava safe?

Can cause mild gastrointestinal disturbances.

Note: Extended continuous intake can cause skin, hair, and nails to temporarily discolor to a yellow tone. (In this case, discontinue using this herb.)

May cause red eyes, puffy face, and muscle weakness.

May cause allergic skin reactions (rare).

May cause accommodative disturbances (e.g. pupil enlargement and oculomotor-equilibrium disturbances).


Is there any time when I shouldn't take kava kava?

Pregnant or breastfeeding patients should not take this herb.

Patients with endogenous depression.

Interactions with conventional drugs.

Patients taking substances acting on the central nervous system (e.g. alcohol, barbiturates, and psychopharmacological agents) may experience a potentiation effect.

SPECIAL WARNING

Patients should not take this herb for longer than 3 months without medical advice.

Kava kava may adversely affect motor reflexes and judgment for driving and/or operating heavy machinery (even at prescribed dosages).
