Crataegus monogyna, C. laevigata, and related species
Hawthorn berries consist of the dried fruits of Crataegus monogyna Jaquin emend. Lindman or Crataegus laevigata (Poiret) DeCandolle or others in a valid pharmacopoeia citing Crataegus [Fam. Rosaceae].
The fruits contain armines, flavonols (kaempferol and quercetin), and flavone derivatives, hyperoside, vitexin glycosides, orientin glycosides, procyanidins, proanthocyanidins, cyanogenetic glycosides, and saponins.
Daily dosage: 0.3g. to 1.0g. or by infusion three times daily. Liquid extract: 0.5ml. to 1.0ml. three times daily (1:1 in 25% alcohol). Tincture 1ml. to 2ml. three times daily (1:5 in 45% alcohol).
