Is goldenseal safe?

In large doses, isolated alkaloid hydrastine has caused exaggerated reflexes, convulsions, paralysis, and death from respiratory failure.

Excessively large quantities of goldenseal may be fatal.

At therapeutic doses, goldenseal is essentially non-toxic.

Symptoms of goldenseal poisoning include stomach upset, nervous symptoms, and depression.


Is there any time when I shouldn't take goldenseal?

Pregnant of lactating patients.

Patients with high blood pressure.

May interact with heparin. (berberine may cause coagulant activity that may oppose the action of heparin.)
