Is cobalt safe?

Side effects from high cobalt intake are reportedly rare.

Large amounts of inorganic cobalt (cobalt not combined with vitamin B12) can result in an overproduction of red blood cells, which can thicken the blood and increase the risk for developing heart disease and stroke.

How much cobalt do I need?

There is no Daily Value, Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), or estimated safe and adequate range established for cobalt.

The average daily intake of cobalt is 5.0mcg. to 8.0mcg.

A deficiency of cobalt actually indicates a deficiency of vitamin B12, and increased consumption of supplementation with vitamin B12 treats any known deficiency symptoms of this mineral.
